PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Maricopa County voters have passed Proposition 409, a nearly $900 million bond that would help Valleywise Health, the county’s public health care system.
In April, the Maricopa County Special Health Care District Board of Directors voted unanimously to put a $898 million bond question in the hands of voters this year.
After this week’s election, the numbers for Prop 409 were too close to call, but on Friday, Maricopa County officials said voters passed the measure.
In 2014, 63% of voters in Maricopa County approved a $935 million bond for Valleywise Health, which was used to build and open the new medical center last year.
Officials have said the money would be used to build a new 200-bed behavioral health hospital, build a new outpatient specialty center on the main campus, expand pediatric and primary care, enhance physician training, and add observation beds at the medical center.
Also this election, dozens of school districts asked for voters to approve higher taxes to help pay for teacher salaries, school supplies, and improvements.
