Prevent firearm deaths

In 2023, firearms were the leading cause of death for children ages 1–17, taking more lives than car crashes, overdoses, or cancer. Policy solutions that can keep kids safe include Child Access Prevention laws, which ensure safe, secure storage, and Extreme Risk Protection Orders, which can temporarily restrict access to firearms by people at risk of harming themselves and others.

“Gun deaths among children are not inevitable. With research-backed policies and a commitment to safe storage, we can turn the tide and make sure kids grow up in safer, healthier communities.” —Joshua Horwitz, JD, Co-director, Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions and Dana Feitler Professor of the Practice in Gun Violence Prevention and Advocacy
