Integrating Behavioral Health & Substance Use Treatment with Rural Education – Quinnipiac University

[Music] our program has this unique and wonderful collaboration between Quinnipiac ner school of medicine and Hartford healthc care sites so we have uh this worldclass medical school with all of the scholarship and support that that leverages along with a Health Care system that is also well-versed in undergraduate and graduate medical education clinical Innovation research and scholarship as well as commitment to the community so I think one of the really important things about the design of this program is that it leverages the partnership between Hartford Healthcare and Quinnipiac University which are both worldclass institutions that are Innovative in the way that they design their experiences we’re one of three new residency programs that have been started just this year including rural family medicine and anesthesiology we’re incredibly excited about those opportunities as well we have lots of opportunities to partner with other aspects of mental health and Behavioral Health Care in Connecticut including the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services the Department of Corrections and other Rural and Community Based programs that will give our trainees a totally unique and Innovative experience that they wouldn’t have otherwise pipak University’s rural Psychiatry program is going to be a program that’s in collaboration with St Vincent’s Medical Center as well as Charlotte Hungerford hospital it will be four residents per year and the first two years they’ll be spending predominantly at the Bridgeport campus and Westport which is a more Suburban urban area of Connecticut and then the last two years the residents will be transitioning to torington which is a more rural setting here at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Quinnipiac rural Psychiatry program is a new program that is being developed to train the next phase of leaders in Psychiatry that will help to make the mental Healthcare System better there’s a lot uh needed in rural areas and so this program will be developed to to help people understand what it takes to be a good psychiatrist in a rural setting and also a good leader we’re really proud that our program is developing a brand new residency Clinic that will address access issues but also sub specialty areas of care as well as new Innovations in Psychotherapy training and exposure to communities that really need the services we are focusing on a rural Healthcare Systems track within our program as well as collaboration with local communi leaders and institutional leaders so that our residents are well prepared to address the current issues but the ones that come tomorrow we’re really excited to be welcoming residents in order to train them with the highest standards of care there’s as many know a shortage of psychiatrists throughout the country and region furthermore from a rural perspective there are a lot of people in need in our community that uh have difficulty accessing care close to where they live and so having a way to address those needs having a way to bring in people that are passionate and excited to learn about Psychiatry and hopefully will be interested in practicing where they’ve trained is something that we’re really looking forward to and so the way that it’s going to be implemented is they’ll learn all the basics of Psychiatry that they would in any residency but we’ll also have a focus on what to do in rural settings they’ll have to be more of a jack of all trades and so we’ll be really teaching them about all different fields of Psychiatry and also a good bit about Psychotherapy which is I think going to be a strong point of the program program so that they can take care of all aspects of a person and also help a system to grow I think with our program being a rural Psychiatry program there’s going to be an even larger emphasis in having our residents understand and appreciate the importance of that connection with our community and that can be in the form of um collaboration and connection with primary care providers Specialists local mental health agencies schools and even law enforcement agencies within the community I think we’re in a wonderful Community we provide a diverse patient population of both uh rural uh suburban and urban settings we have passionate staff and passionate faculty without whom we wouldn’t be able to be running this Residency program we’ve recruited several exciting faculty and new residents to begin this process but we’re at the beginning of a long journey where we’re going to be constantly evolving and improving this program to make it the best that it can be for the next several decades to come for resident phys Physicians who are interested in not only learning how to become a great psychiatrist but want to become leaders in Psychiatry this will be a particularly unique opportunity where they get to shape the future of this program we’re really excited about the future of our rural Psychiatry program because we have the privilege of training the next generation of psychiatrists while providing excellent care to our patients we hope that our residents stay local after graduation but we know that they’ll be prepared to teach educate innovate lead and practice anywhere that they choose

The Rural Psychiatry Residency Program is committed to providing an inclusive, safe and innovative learning environment in order to train the next generation of psychiatrists for excellence in clinical practice, scholarship and leadership and service to our communities. Their vision is to enhance the health of our communities by providing outstanding psychiatric care in the communities they serve, while addressing health care inequities through community outreach, the education of health care professionals and scholarly inquiry. They train their residents to provide compassionate, high-quality care in rural and underserved areas.
