SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – A very quiet fundraiser got a lot of attention on Friday, Nov. 14.
Rosecrance Jackson Centers, a local non-profit that serves thousands of people every year, held its very first Silent Disco fundraiser at Design West Studio in Sioux City.
To get in, people could either pay $10, or donate a piece of men’s essential clothing for those going through recovery.
Once in, everyone had the chance to wear a pair of headphones, choose one of 3 different DJs, then boogie.
“We know people don’t like loud music, so we just give them the option to control their own volume with these headphones. The color indicated in the headphones is what channel you’re on. So we could be listening to R&B, country, and 2000s hip-hop,” said Omar Munoz, Chief Experience Officer at River City Silent Disco and member of Rosecrance Jackson Recovery Center’s Presidential Leadership Council.

The entire disco was organized by Rosecrance’s brand-new President’s Leadership Council. The council is made up of people who are passionate about helping those with substance use disorders and mental health issues, and want to help and learn more about Rosecrance’s cause.
“It’s an opportunity to grow, grow my leadership development skills, serve in the community, provide to a great cause at Rosecrance Jackson, and network with other colleagues that have like-minded mission and passion,” said Dr. Julian Lee, Chair of the President’s Leadership Council. “So it’s been a great learning journey and experience, and doing things like tonight, to give back to the community and to give to an organization that gives to the community, is just an honor to be a part of it.”

Friday, those organizers wanted to create a fun atmosphere while also raising awareness about men’s mental health.
“One of the things that we think about is that you can’t have sound health without a sound mind. So, when we think about mental health and sound minds, we really like the theme of silent disco, kind of having that music in your own world, things like that, and just really celebrating and trying to bring awareness to sound mental health and how that’s very important as it relates to overall health,” said Dr. Julian Lee.

Once people were done getting groovy on the dance floor, they were able to take part in a silent auction.
All the money raised will go directly to their mission.
“Last year we served over 8,500 individuals, including 383 children and youth. And so, substance use disorders and mental health disorders is something that affects, it can affect anybody. And it’s a disorder, you know, just like it would be a health disorder or anything like that,” said Karina Pedroza, Director of Development for Rosecrance Foundation. “At Rosecrance Jackson, we don’t turn anybody away, whether they’re uninsured or underinsured. So the Rosecrance Foundation and the money that we raise today will make sure that nobody is turned away and that we are able to help those that need our help.”
