New York state mental health experts are shining a light on mental health in our youngest generations.

According to the CDC, about one in every five children have been diagnosed with a mental, emotional or behavioral health condition.

Experts say that some of the findings behind these conditions can include academic pressures, stress brought on by AI and social media, parents not having a job and fears over not having a future job for themselves.

This time of the year also brings about seasonal affective disorder, which can impact children as well.

“The symptoms can be prevented in some ways by continuing to expose oneself to the right type of light. If they are severe they can be treated with medications as well as psychotherapy,” Dr. Caroline Carney, advisor, Coalition to Empower our Future, said.

Experts say to help their child, parents should understand that the symptoms of mental health struggles are real and treat them with care.
