GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Violent crime survivors can now receive free psychiatric and mental health services at Corewell Health’s new trauma recovery center.

The recovery center, located at Corewell’s community medicine clinic at 75 Sheldon Blvd. SE, will offer therapy, case management and psychiatric medication services to adults suffering from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Subodh Jain, vice president and department chair for behavioral health at Corewell, said every survivor of violence “deserves a chance to heal.”

“This center ensures they don’t have to face trauma alone,” he said. “Our multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, social workers, and addiction specialists, all working together to restore hope and stability.”

The center, the first of its kind in West Michigan, was made possible through a $1.6 million grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Jain said.

Violent crime survivors often show up at emergency rooms to be treated for their physical injuries. However, the wait for behavioral health care to address the trauma they suffered can be significant, he said.

The goal of the new center is to provide faster access to that care.

“The importance is getting patients to heal faster,” Jain said. “The occurrence of trauma can actually predispose them to additional illnesses.”

The clinic has been ramping up over the past couple weeks after renovations to the space were completed six weeks ago.

The goal of the renovations was to provide a safe, welcoming space for patients, he said. With one psychiatrist, one psychologist, and three psychotherapists who specialize in treating trauma, the center aims to provide the full scope of care patients need to recover, Jain said.

“Many times, trauma can be hidden, and this is a place where they can actually get it addressed before it becomes worse,” he said.

The $1.6 million grant is expected to last for three years, said Jain, who noted that Corewell is seeking another $2 million grant for the center.

“At Corewell Health, we would hope to support this in perpetuity because this is a need for the community,” he said.
