MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – With the sunnier days dwindling and the holidays fast approaching, mental health comes into focus for millions of Americans.
With added stresses including shopping, meal prep, family dynamics and financial concerns, many feel overwhelmed during this time of year.
Other issues, like substance abuse, can also increase around the holidays. An Addiction Medicine Physician with Aspirus Health says help is available.
“There are many reasons and many stressors, and it’s just not easy. It’s not easy under the best of circumstances. There are a lot of people that are hurting, help is available. It takes somebody’s willingness and a desire to do things differently but, that does not come easy and that’s just not our default setting,” Aspirus Addiction Medicine Physician Dr. Kirk Klemme said.
A mental health expert advises setting measured expectations.
“Take some deep breaths, first and foremost, remember you’re not alone, so many other people are dealing with really complicated emotions around the holidays. I think an important thing is to set realistic expectations,” Suunta Integrative Health Mental Health Therapist Lauren Michie said.
Michie also recommends getting good rest and staying active to maintain a positive mood during the holidays.
