Navigating children’s mental health services as a parent? (Like Minds Ep 14) BBC Stories
[Music] I had presumed if your child had got mental-health issues you would get help straightaway he’s always been you know an anxious child really and things started to get on top of him and it got to a point where he just couldn’t cope and mentally everything collapsed around him one day he just wouldn’t go out of the door and couldn’t go to school I unfortunately went through a period of time where I was kind of locking him out the door saying you are going to go you will be fine it’s just a headache you’ve got to go to school his behavior was totally of character for him and that there was something that seriously you know wrong [Music] went to the GP and they cancel you need perhaps need to access Jordan mental health services so we were advised then to give them a ring Gus off I would ring every week and say is anything happening and eventually we had a letter saying oh you can’t refer the GP has to refer he deteriorated dramatically we had to removed have learnt to remove sharp things from his bedroom because he was just so desperate I rang probably on a weekly basis I’m either deny that I minded and they got really fed up of me and I think that was why I was just saying we are desperate we are desperate you’ve got to help and then the psychiatrist was I think it was another couple of months down the line after that it’s you know he absolutely ridiculous wasting time and they don’t offer anything else there was nothing else available it was just CBT there nothing else they cried every night himself to sleep wanted to die tried to throw himself out of cars you know he was absolutely desperate totally desperate and so we so we had one psychiatrist who we felt was fantastic and totally understood my son he knew he got him and he said right we need these the next step so I’m going to try and push this for you then we didn’t see him again I think since we’ve been there we have seen five different psychiatrists so none of them know him there’s no continuity every time you sit there they haven’t really looked through the notes and that’s a worry we were doing the therapy yourself you know I researched CBT I looked at how we could help him that’s the way I was floundering really to be honest those children are are absolutely desperate are the ones that their priority and you could understand that but if early intervention doesn’t happen there’s all these children are going to escalate until they’re out there absolutely desperate and then and then they’ve just got more and more of this and it’s a bigger issue to solve them [Music] I asked him with this morning what do you think could have been done better by comes how do you think they could have helped you and he said I don’t know he said but they haven’t done anything and that’s really that’s really sad thankfully he’s a you know coming through and he has come through the other side he’s you know back in school and he’s going out with friends when he can and he’s a much much happier person but it was a very very dark place and we would not want to go back to [Music]
For some parents, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are a lifeline. But for Adele and her 15-year-old son it was a case of frustration, long waiting times and a lack of continuity.
We approached the NHS trust responsible for Adele’s son’s initial referral to CAMHS, but they were unable to comment as they are no longer responsible for his care.

I’m battling with depression and anxiety myself, and as a college student I am only allowed 10 visits within the academic year. It’s tough. I can’t imagine your experience
I live in Canada and mental health services for children are horrible here. I had to wait years to get positioned with a therapist.
The therapist didn't help me at all. She just talked about her dog and other BS like that. She never had time to book me in so I had no regular schedule.
They just shut me in a room with my mom. Then the therapist talks to mum like I'm not even there.
I usually sit on the floor in the corner during appointments because I'm scared. I have shown up for appointments and the front desk has told me that the therapist wanted to leave early and for mum to call in and rebook tomorrow.
There is no continuity. My first therapist dumped me because I'm too complicated or whatever. She shipped me off to the psychologist who is really mean. I had no choice it was all done behind my back.
A psychiatrist put me on a meditation called sertraline. I'm not seeing any benefits and I keep asking for permission to discontinue using it. She says no and then insists that I just need a higher dose. I'm now on the highest dose of sertraline and still nothing.
Now my psychiatrist is saying that I need to stay on the drug for a year before I will see a difference. I'm so frustrated!
I don't want to take sertraline but I don't have a choice. At the beginning of treatment I refused to take it because I don't think I need an antidepressant. My family doctor yelled at me until I cried.
I feel powerless. Nothing gets done in my occassional appointments. It's like my psychologist doesn't remember who I am each time. She has called me a girl many times before which upsets me because I'm most definitely not a girl.
Thank you for sharing your story Adelle. I really appreciate hearing others stories; it makes me feel less alone.
I'm glad to hear your son is on the mend and coming out the other side of this ugly battle. I wish you both the best of luck.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Max
He is very, very lucky to have such alert, proactive and caring parents! Mine never cared and just kept piling on more and more pressure and eventually i got totally deserted, shunned and the target of awful accusations. Am now in my 40's and have finally found two amazingly caring, supportive and loyal friends and a caring, empathetic doctor. Am sooo glad to hear he is much better now and after all this has been a journey of hope and success for all of us to take comfort in! Thank you.
His Mum is so good. She's a strong woman and really on the ball.
This happened to my son then told had Aspergers sat 14
Yes my son seen so many different therapy workers all left
waiting times differ depending on how severe they think your case is. i go to camhs in ireland but the system is run the same as the uk. my first referal was when i was 6 and it took a year to get seen. i was so depressed i wanted to die. i was SIX. and they discharged after a few years wih nothing changing. i was referred back when i was 12 for gender dysphoria and was discharged immediately. then i was referred again for psyhosis and they saw me in a month but didnt listen to me and discharged me. 6 months of self harm and suicide attempts later i was finally taken on by the new psychologist there. now im on another waiting list for inpatient services because im not doing well atm. if camgs was properly funded and staffed then i would have gotten proper treament when i was 6 instead of being where i am now.
I’m still waiting after one month to get into camhs after two doctors referrals and a school referral and listed as urgent and schools rang up 3 times a day and still nothing it’s absolutely a mess of a service
