INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The CareSource Invitational, a college basketball exhibition game featuring Indiana University and the University of Louisville, will take place on December 6 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to raise awareness for adolescent and young adult mental health.
The event, organized by CareSource, a nonprofit managed care organization, aims to normalize mental health conversations and create supportive environments for young people. It is part of CareSource’s broader commitment to addressing whole-person health through physical engagement and mental wellness messaging.
“We have a crisis in the realm of mental health here in this country,” said Dr. Cameual Wright, President of CareSource Indiana. “Suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals aged 10 to 24.”
Ahead of the game, a pep rally will be held on December 5 at Arsenal Tech High School, featuring IU coach Darian DeVries, UofL coach Pat Kelsey, and members of both teams. The rally aims to engage students and emphasize the message that “it’s okay to not be okay.”
During the game, CareSource will recognize two behavioral health facilities, LifeSpring and Regional Health, for their innovative work in meeting the behavioral health needs of CareSource members.
Dr. Wright emphasized the importance of seeking help for mental health concerns, advising those in crisis to reach out to the 988 mental health crisis hotline.
The CareSource Invitational seeks to bring attention to mental health issues among young people, using the platform of college basketball to foster awareness and reduce stigma. The event underscores the message that mental health is as important as physical health, encouraging young people to seek help when needed.
