Ways to Help a Loved One After a Mental Health Hospitalization

(strong empowering music) – So let’s say you’ve just had a loved one who has been released from
a mental health facility or a hospitalization
for behavioral health. You may not be sure how to handle them, or more importantly, how to help them. Here are a few tips that can
help you get through that. Number one, treat this just like you would any other kind of a hospitalization, just as if they had been in the hospital and had a broken limb or maybe surgery. The mind is just as important as the body. Two, educate yourself. Online there’s a wealth of
information that you can find, especially from respected
and research websites, like the National Institute
for Mental Health. If you can be more educated,
you can help them better. Step three, just listen to them. If your loved one knows that
you’re going to give them a kind, nonjudgmental ear, they’re gonna be much more
likely to talk to you. And just give them time. They’ll talk when they’re ready. Fourth, help with their active care. Once they get out of the hospital, that’s when a lot of the
true work’s going to begin. They may have appointments
they need to get to, or outpatient therapies. Maybe you just need to give them a ride. Maybe you need to be there
and remind them of it. And also, they’re gonna be
on some new medications. Take some time to learn
what those medications are and what they do. Then maybe you can help
remind them to take them. Last, just be there for them. Knowing that you’re going
to be there and help them, support them, hug them, and treat them just like
you would anyone else could make all the
difference in their recovery. (empowering music)
