I originally became interested in rTMS because I was interested in brain stimulation in general so I was looking for alternatives to ECT and I came across our TMS it is a very effective treatment for depression it is non-invasive and how it works is by delivering magnetic pulses through a magnetic coil to the surface of the brain a particular area of the brain that we target that is involved in mood regulation the patient receiving our TMS all they have to do is sit comfortably on a chair and daydream or chat to the nurse or read a newspaper I believe in our TMS because I have seen it working I have seen it working now for a number of years we were the first adopters of our TMS in the UK for clinical purposes it is important to know that even though our TMS is a relatively innovative treatment it is approved by nice the National Institute for clinical excellence the person has a tremendous stigma like any psychological disorders and many people are reluctant to acknowledge that they may they may have expressed one of the prongs which passion is that normally intervention for an episode of depression is that the GP will issue a prescription for and repressive education now we know that in about half of those who try an antidepressant tablet you know it simply doesn’t work and from then on the options are to try other antidepressants to try combinations of different tablets which will give you more side effects etc you know from a purely pharmacological point of view certainly the options are not that fool and therefore I think that is why you know intervention such as our TMS have a particularly important role and in fact it is very effective often in patients who have tried already other treatments and successfully and we have treated so far about 150 patients with with our TMS so I don’t think there is anybody else in the UK with this level of experience and like everything else experience is crucial you know we we know this treatment very well we know this technology very well it is very rewarding when one sees you know patients getting better because the impact of depression on the lives is absolutely huge
