The Illinois Liquor Control Commission says as the new year begins, residents may take the opportunity to curb bad habits and participate in Dry January, a 31-day sobriety challenge aimed at improving participants’ well-being through cleansing the body and adopting new healthy habits.

The commission says some of the benefits to Dry January include repaired liver damage, decreased risk of heart disease, improved sleep, and weight loss. Some of their tips to those interested or choosing to participate include removing alcohol from their home and other places they frequent, loading up on non-alcoholic beverages like water or juice, and establishing a support group by letting family and close friends know their plans.

The Illinois Liquor Control Commission is designed to protect the health and safety of Illinoisans through careful control and regulation of the manufacture, distribution, and sale of alcohol in addition to developing strategies to reduce youth access to alcohol and educating others on responsible beverage service.
