ELLENVILLE, N.Y. — A man was hospitalized Sunday after allegedly barricading himself while armed with a shotgun in a “mental health crisis,” village police said.

In a press release on Monday, Ellenville police said at around 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, police responded to “a report of a barricaded subject that was armed with a shotgun.”

The release said police “quickly determined that the subject was suffering from a mental health crisis.”

The release said the man was convinced to surrender without incident after “a few hours,” following a request for crisis negotiators from the Ulster County Sheriff’s office. The man was “taken into custody and transferred to HealthAlliance Hospital for further treatment,” police said.

While police did not say where the incident happened, the release said area roads were shut down and residents were instructed to shelter in place “out of an abundance of caution and because of it being a residential neighborhood in proximity to each other.”

Ellenville Police Chief Philip Mattracion could not be immediately reached for comment on Thursday.

Ellenville police were assisted on the scene by the Ulster County Sheriff’s office deputies and drone operators, Ulster County Emergency Response Team, New York state police officers, state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and state police drone operators, the Ellenville Rescue Squad, Ellenville Fire Department, a d Ellenville Street Department.

No injuries were reported.
