Canadian actress and comedian Claire Brosseau is opening up once again about her desire to end her life with the permission and assistance of the Canadian government.

Brosseau, 48, has long been vocal for a while now about her mental health struggles, previously revealing that she began abusing drugs and alcohol at age 14, leading her parents to take her to a psychotherapist who diagnosed her with manic depression, per a story published in The New York Times on Monday, December 29.

The actress, who starred in 2008’s A Previous Engagement, has struggled with a slew of other issues, including an eating disorder, anxiety, personality disorder as well as chronic suicidal ideation, the outlet reported.

In a 2024 Substack post, Brosseau revealed that she is hoping to end her life with medical aid in dying (MAID), a Canadian program designed to help people with terminal illnesses end their lives on their own terms with the assistance of a medical practitioner.

The outlet spoke with two of her psychiatrists, one of whom said they’d respect her decision if she was approved for MAID. Meanwhile, the other still believes there are better choices for her.

However, people suffering solely from mental illness are not eligible to participate in the MAID program until March 17, 2027, which is when new expansions allowing for Brosseau’s situation take effect.

Brosseau says it is unlikely she will be able to wait until then. “Every day I don’t know if I’ll get through the day,” she told The New York Times. “It’s been too much already. It’s enough.”
