Hi Preston, awesome content as always! Could you make a video on how you interact with patients that are angry/aggressive for various reasons (healthcare system not working for them, feeling misunderstood, but also instrumentally to gain something from you as a caregiver)?
This practice really needs a serious overhaul. When someone is repeatedly saying that they need to leave because they have things to do – like get back to work because they’re on a deadline – PLEASE GOD DON’T SEND THEM TO A HOSPITAL.
Doctors, use your words and ask the correct questions. Such as, “do you have a plan or means to execute that plan?” Don’t mess around and add unnecessary stress to someone’s day. Especially if they came in because they have an infection.
Been depressed/suicidal most of my life. I am not afraid of death/dying. I AM afraid of psych holds. That should tell you everything about the system we have put in place.
Incorrect. The hold is usually 72 hours not including weekends and holidays. In Illinois there is no 72 hour hold. People are routinely involuntarily admitted to psychiatric hospitals with NO suicidal or homicidal ideation, they are abducted, held against their will, denied their civil rights, and horrifically harmed in the process. Involuntary psychiatric hospitalization and treatment is the imprisonment of innocent people.
So basically when you agree with the treatment without having a judge involved/ court/ wanting out, it turns into voluntary? Thats a pretty good deal tbh although youre forced to take meds. You dont lose “rights” at least even though it feels involuntary
Consuming antipsychotics once in your life increases your chances of developing schizophrenia by 2x. Consuming antipsychotics 50+ times increases your chances of developing schizophrenia 6x. Use of anti depressants like SSRIs can increase chances of psychosis and schizophrenia in rare cases. Although rare, drugs like these can induce permanent and irreversible psychosis hardly distinguishable from schizophrenia. Adolescent exposure has greater risk than adult exposure. Antipsychotics are more dangerous for inducing schizophrenia than psychedelics. So watch out.
Schizophrenia is a highly genetic disorder, but it can be triggered by drugs. If you have mental instability, you should be very cautious with antipsychotics and anti depressants. Schizophrenic psychotic breaks cause permanent brain damage, so they should be avoided as much as possible. Check if anyone in your extended family has a history of schizophrenia, psychosis, or mental illness, and if so, you should be super careful with antipsychotics and anti depressants.
The widespread use of antipsychotics is going to create many more schizophrenics.
I strongly advise against chronic antipsychotic use. Recreational use of antipsychotics is not a good thing.
Note: Even with 6x increased risk, schizophrenia is still quite rare, so don't freak out. Anti depressants are also good for some people. I am not telling you to stop taking your medication if it works for you. I am talking about people with genetic susceptibility to schizophrenia, which is rare. This information will only be relevant to a small fraction of people, so don't misunderstand its meaning.
1 in 222 adults has schizophrenia. (Not all of it is paranoid schizophrenia, there are various types and degrees.)
If you or someone you know has schizophrenia, it requires psychedelic and psychonautic help. See a psychonaut as soon as possible, don't put it off. The sooner you start the psychedelic the better it works. Schizophrenia usually begins between the age of 18 to 27.
A lot of homeless people suffer from mental disorders like schizophrenia which cripples their ability to function normally in society and hold a job consistently. The homeless are not just lazy people or people who've had bad financial luck, 50%+ have serious mental disorders which make normal life impossible. Which is why it is wrong to just blame the poor for being poor. If you had schizophrenia you'd be poor too. The rich underestimate how much health plays a role in generating wealth. It's very very hard to generate wealth when you're ill through no fault of your own. Which is why a libertarian society is pure nonsense. Society requires systems to help people who are in no condition to help themselves, and charity or private sector is not enough. Government needs to fund serious research. The kind of research and funding that right-wingers cut, cut, cut. How much of such research has Trump and Musk cut?
The collective economic burden of schizophrenia is around $340 billion dollars/year. If you invented a cure for schizophrenia it would be worth $340 billion/year! How's that for a life purpose! You have the chance to cure 20+ million people from hell and you're just sitting around doing nothing? Helping cure mental illness can be a huge life purpose.
Funding for research into mental illness is one of the best uses of public tax money because it pays for itself when cures are found. Healthy people are more productive, generate more taxes, consume less resources, and create less damage.
You don't really understand reality until you can make sense of insanity.
Note: What I refer to as insanity is not schizophrenia. Insanity is a much more radical domain of Consciousness.
I got a ten minute i pad interview and wasvput on 72 hr hold was continually fed misinformation and not allowed to use any soap or water to wash after i used the bedside commode that was not emptied the entire time I eas held
im a mental patient, im a diagnosed severe schizo. every fucking day i think about dying. random times throughout the day. ive been committed probably too many times maybe. to all you emt's when you strap me to the gurney it sucks because im fidgety. its hard to sit still
My son has been in a psychayric unit now for just over 7 months i have just appealed his 2nd c.t.o does any body have any advice as to how i can win the appeal i live in the uk thanks
The psychiatrist at Cedars Sinai gimme an evaluation of less than 1 min. The next thing I heard was that I was getting transferred to a psychiatric hospital. It’s the most traumatic experience in my life. I wasn’t actually going to hurt myself I really deserved a professional evaluation. I’m wondering, if I should look for justice in this situation. Thank you so much if you read this.
I’ve been voluntarily admitted to psychiatric hospitals three times. Not once have I been made better from them. Totally harmful and waste of time. Why is efficacy never brought up when it comes to involuntary hospitalizations?
How does this process play out if the person was picked up several states away from where they live? I'm currently going through this with a loved one who's on a 72 hr psych eval hold 3 states away. We were trying to get them to go in for a voluntary hold at home, before they fled.
The same kid that's trying to admit me Maxwell artist I mean Maxwell Arthur Jewell Saying that I'm a danger to woman and I'm a somehow a sex offender Trying to admit me to Kingswood hospital not completely understanding I know what the predicament and even mental ward through technical terms and doctors speech I wonder why I took such a Time As Maxwell Arthur Jewell is with his FeFe on 17th and vinewood Wyandotte Michigan Having sex with a stuffed animal pig like a fifi Like I didn't have Austin booth and Dylan Fraser personally see these things As he's trying to sexually assault my mother Well she's all f*** up on pills recreational because of cancer and other f**** mental reasons I wonder why people treat me differently
I wonder how Max didn't go to the psych ward when he said he was going to shoot up Wyandotte Michigan with a shotgun 😂 But I f**** sneeze Not even doing a f**** thing
I can see where this can CAUSE lots of issues. Here’s why:
In recent years, I’ve dealt with narcissistic family, “friends”, and neighbors, all of whom I’ve gone no contact with. Psychologists who are abreast of the worst of Cluster B issues know these antisocially disordered types can be a nightmare, requiring law enforcement at times and what they’re looking for is absolute control.
In my situation, because I have what I consider to be an ex-sibling, who feels entitled to my property and lives nearby AND a neighbor, who thinks she’s the moral authority and neighborhood watch regarding how you maintain your yard, what would stop either of these from filing for a mental health warrant, on me or anyone else, just for harassment? So, obviously, what I’m outlining here is that, any person looking to control or punish can get a warrant, to disrupt your life, even if minimally and the law might see that as due process, instead of harassment. Add to this, the making up of laws and redefinement at will of the homeless that are said to be “disappearing” and you have absolute chaos. I have to wonder if there can be any stipulations added to durable PoA, to prevent this type of thing, if this at all applies.
My mom called the police herself because she thought someone was shooting us up (they werent). The police took her into custody, she eventually got sent into a psychiatric hospital. I havent seen her in almost a month. Its extremely sad and nerve wracking. I want my mom back but I understand shes not herself right now. She also requested to go home and they told her no
We signed executive orders from the President of the United States, and the Vice President of the United States so that there will be people that are poor getting rich, by firebombing State run mental institutions with the Federal Government on their side!. Yes this is the right way to be, it is standing up for Justice, which is an important priority!.
This 100% does not seem right. It's sad that one person has the power amd the right to simply hold someone against their will and remove their freedoms based on what if's
I cooperated when I did not have to, once at the er the er was willing to say I was ok, but sheriff called his superior and threaten me with a disorderly conduct. My agitation increased and when tried to leave er and security stopped me. When I begged for sheriff to just take me to jail they didn't. Resulting hours to wait on a physc doctor and the next morning I tried to leave the er/security fractured my foot without medical attention strapped me down for a three hour ride to a hospital where injury was found. Three months later sheriffs came to my residence to tell me not to trespass the hospital only if a medical emergency. Never did I not go there for anything else. Lawyer?
I've always been scared about this side of things when getting to know psychiatrists in a social environment/as friends. You explained it well, thanks for reassuring. These are some tough but well-trained calls.

This is so draconian, jesus christ
Does attempted suicide warrant for involuntary admission?
Could I talk with you privately for some advice
