Can EDM Cure Depression?

EDM showed up frequently in playlists labeled for mental health support especially among people feeling low. But while the connection is interesting, the survey didn’t assess actual outcomes or clinical symptoms. Music can support mood, but it’s not a substitute for treatment.

  1. Music does stimulate the limbic system. Certain songs can trigger sad feelings others happy or defiant feeling. "I'm not a number" Bob Seger for instance. While not a cure for mood disorders. Those with mood disorders may be a little bit more sensitive to "catching" feeling and therefore help themselves pop out of a bad mood at least temporarily.
If you find mood and music go together for you. Do pick your music wisely. Don't listen to very emo stuff if you are already down etc.
Just friendly observations from someone who has mood disorders in the family.
    Your experience may vary.

  2. I used dancing as an emotional outlet and mental break. I made safety rules for myself as I was always by myself. I never spent more than 4 hours out, the first 2 hours were always spent watching people, relaxing and getting my anxiety down enough to brave the dance floor. I never talked to anyone, hooked up, or left with anyone. I only allowed myself 3 drinks, rarely did I drink all 3 and the drinks could only be fruit alcohol drinks. I'm on the autism spectrum, have extreme ADHD and PTSD, manic depression, and extreme sensory sensitivity. All of which makes voluntary social interactions very hard. Music frees me in ways that nothing else does.

  3. Yeahhhhhh maybe for some people but definitely not for me – I get super overstimulated with EDM VERY quickly and then it really makes me feel trapped and anxious (mostly bc I’m usually with friends who don’t want to leave the club yet). I had a phase in college where (when on drugs) I enjoyed EDM in my free time but now I’m so fine with acoustic hippie music to help me feel better (and Taylor swift if I just wanna lean into it and cry 😂)

  4. I have suffered depression for over 50 years. Music helps a current mood. It distracts the self destructive mind. It can help you find the energy to make it through the day. It does not cure.

  5. This is part of the reason that religious practices include singing. Most ritual practices include different methods that helps people to become spiritually connected and makes people less likely to have depression, anxiety or thoughts of suicide

  6. helps with grounding and understimulation. can also help with overstimulation sometimes (bad noise gets replaced with good noise, brain has full control over the stimulation, no longer overstimulating). i think the mental health benefits might be especially noticeable in adhd/autistic individuals for those reasons.

  7. Music is POWERFUL! Then, you add dance! I don't need a double- blind, peer reviewed, blah-blah medical study to tell me what I already know since I was a child. (Children know this!)
And, think about the Hertz & those numbers & healing! You Tube has lots of videos about those!

  8. Ladies, if you're over 35, ask your doc to test your hormones if you suffer from anxiety (or depression!) I've not had a single anxiety issue since the Estrodiol patches or progesterone pearl pills! Those hormones nose dive on us at about 35 years old. Ask your Doc!

  9. I thoroughly believe in music therapy as an added aid treatment for my anxiety disorder, and I use it to help get my butt moving when I need to do something 🎶 ❤
