BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WAFF) – January is National Mentoring Month, a time dedicated to highlighting the powerful role mentorship plays in shaping lives, building confidence, and strengthening communities.
For this episode of This Month Matters, digital host Tatyana White sat down with Courtney Green, a former Division I basketball player, entrepreneur, mental health advocate, and mentor, to discuss why mentorship is more important than ever for teen girls and young women.
Green shared how her transition from elite athletics to purpose-driven advocacy shaped her passion for mentoring, as well as how mentorship, faith, and community can help young women navigate self-doubt, pressure, and adversity.
Drawing from her own experiences as a wife, mother of five, and author of Stronger Every Day, Green emphasized the importance of equipping young women with emotional resilience and healthy coping skills early in life.
National Mentoring Month serves as a reminder that mentorship isn’t just about guidance; it’s about connection, consistency, and showing up. Whether through formal programs, coaching, or everyday encouragement, mentors play a critical role in helping young people recognize their potential and walk confidently in their purpose.
Green emphasizes that the biggest part of being a good mentor is showing that you care.
“Just the simple fact that you’re actually caring about them can go a long way,” Green said.
“It’s always important that we find ways to give back to the next generation and just show them that we care. That’s all I teach other mentors is to just show them that you care, whatever that may look like, show them that you care, you’re going to protect them, and you have their best interest.”
