Students at Los Alamos High School are taking meaningful action to address mental health challenges among their peers and promote open, stigma-free conversations.
Early this year, fundraising activities undertaken by Key Club members involved selling cotton candy at the Los Alamos Summer Concert Series, showing their commitment towards
supporting youth mental health projects. Unlike other fund raising activities where the amount is donated to Erika’s Lighthouse or Los Alamos JJAB, Key Club members decided to involve themselves in efforts geared at ensuring a safe environment where youth can openly discuss their struggles and experiences.
In their efforts to support their mission, Key Club with help from students of the National
Honor Society and the Rotary Interact Club are hosting a seminar featuring Dr. Magdelena
Karlick of Los Alamos JJAB as well as Jessica Strong, a renowned mental health advocate (and Los Alamos County Social Services Director). Together, they will discuss emotional well-being and how to support oneself and others.
Attendees (adults are welcome) will be able to purchase cotton candy with all profits going to Erika’s Lighthouse. A free catered meal from El Parasol will also be available.
This event was supposed to take place during the recent snowstorm and was rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at SALA Event Center.
Editor’s note taken from the Erika’s Lighthouse website https://erikaslighthouse.org/get-to-know-us-faq/ “Erika was a bright light who, sadly, lost her battle with depression in 2004 at age 14. Erika’s Lighthouse was founded in her honor and is dedicated to helping other young people learn about depression and mental health and overcome the stigma surrounding mental health disorders.”
