A trial to consider claims that Google’s YouTube, as well as Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms harmed young people’s mental health is set to start Monday after the jury was selected for the test case Friday.
Law360 has the story.
Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to be among the first witnesses in the case filed with the Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to the story.
The plaintiff, identified as K.G.M., claims that she started using social media at age 6, and it has interfered with her sleep and heightened her anxiety and depression, among other allegations, according to Law360.
Recently, TikTok Inc. and Snap Inc., also named defendants in K.G.M.’s case, reached settlement deals, but roughly 1,000 other consolidated personal injury cases in the judicial council coordination proceedings remain pending, according to the story.
Another federal proceeding is pending in the Northern District of California, where parents, school districts and dozens of states also claim that social media companies encourage children to use social media, which harms their mental health, according to the story.
