MALDEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Tufts Medicine is set to open a new, state-of-the-art behavioral health hospital in Malden in the coming weeks.
The hospital is a joint venture with Acadia Healthcare and offers 144 inpatient beds. That number surpasses the amount of inpatient psychiatric beds scheduled to close at MelroseWakefield Hospital in Melrose and Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford this March.

“I think it’s gonna be a place where people go for expert care, but also they’re gonna feel like they’re in an environment that’s conducive to healing and wellbeing,” said Dr. Brent Forester, Director of Behavioral Health at Tufts Medicine.
The hospital will also offer a wide range of psychiatric specialists, treating children, adolescents, adults, and older adults with mood disorders, addiction, trauma, other psychiatric conditions, and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Forester told WBZ NewsRadio Tuesday that the new facility will also serve as a premier teaching hospital.
“We can really bring expert clinical care and clinicians to teach the next generation of mental health clinicians, and we do have a crisis in that workforce,” Forester said.
A specific opening date for the hospital has not been announced.
