Pitkin County Public Health has been involved in the mental and behavioral health realms in the Roaring Fork Valley since 2017. A funders’ group was created to pool funding and allow stakeholders in the community to collectively fund behavioral health services. Since 2017, funders have included the City of Aspen, Aspen School District, Aspen Valley Hospital, Pitkin County, and the Towns of Snowmass Village and Basalt.

Beginning in 2024, Pitkin County Public Health (PCPH) and Pitkin County Human Services engaged in a behavioral health strategic planning process. The purpose of this process was to determine the strengths and needs in the community to allow for all community members to achieve optimum mental and behavioral health. Pitkin County has a robust and well-funded mental health system, including providers from a variety of backgrounds. However, residents in the valley still report not being able to access the care they need when they need it. Pitkin County published a Request for Proposal (RFP) to select an organization  to lead the process. SHG Advisors was selected and the kick off meeting was held in December of 2024.

Over the course of the next nine months, 111 individuals from 63 organizations engaged in a collaborative process to discuss the needs of community members, mental health providers, and organizations in the community. Nine meetings were held over the course of the plan, in addition to seven focus groups and twenty-five structured interviews. Local organizations as well as community members were invited to participate. A list of participants is featured below. 

The final strategic plan emerged through a collaborative, community-driven process and is grounded in the solid framework of existing services and partnerships.
