FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WBAY) – A Fond du Lac man appeared in court for the first time this week, after a series of terrifying home invasions.

Police say surveillance video shows 19-year-old Justice Butzen wearing a mask that looked like it was from the movie “The Purge” and a shower cap while breaking into homes.

In one case, a young boy woke up to find the intruder standing on the ladder of his lofted bed. The child told police the man then hid under his bed and pushed up on the mattress while he was still on it.

Another witness said she woke up to someone entering her room, and when she told the person to go away, he laughed at her and sat on the edge of her bed near her feet.

The complaint said investigators later found the mask and kitchen knife hidden at the suspect’s home.

According to a criminal complaint, Butzen allegedly admitted to the crimes, telling detectives he was drunk and struggling with long-term mental health issues.

He is currently being held in the Fond du Lac County jail on a $20,000 cash bond.
