YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Mahoning County will get an update next week on its participation in the Ohio Stepping Up Initiative.

The work supports mental health services within the corrections system.

The meeting will share some of the resources already in place, which include mental health court, pre-trial release, crisis intervention training, and veterans court.

Stepping Up offers even more solutions to improve outcomes.

“Example after example of changes that have resulted that make it easier on the jails, break the cycle, costs your county less. Getting them to supportive housing is one of the best ways to break the cycle of going in and out of jail over and over,” said Justice Evelyn Stratton, retired Ohio Supreme Court.

Mahoning County has participated in the program for a while. Columbiana County is another of the 66 participating. Trumbull County does not.
