The Grundy County Health Department has completed a comprehensive Community Health Assessment, offering an extensive review of the health conditions, priorities, and needs of residents across Grundy County. Developed in collaboration with multiple local organizations, the assessment combines community feedback with regional and statewide health data to identify key challenges affecting public health and quality of life within the county.

The report integrates responses from hundreds of residents with statistical health indicators and professional public health analysis. This combined approach allows officials to better understand the most significant health concerns facing local residents and to shape long-term planning for programs and services that address those needs.

Grundy County Health Department Administrator Elizabeth Gibson said the assessment plays a critical role in ensuring that the department’s efforts reflect the experiences and concerns of the community. Gibson said the report helps the department concentrate on the issues residents identify as most important and supports efforts to align programs and services with everyday health challenges faced by individuals and families in Grundy County.

The assessment was created through several months of coordinated work involving the Ozarks Public Health Institute, community partners, organizations, and local residents. The process began in March 2025 and included group discussions, community meetings, and survey responses gathered from residents throughout the county. These contributions were analyzed alongside state and national health data, producing a detailed snapshot of community health conditions, social determinants of health, and overall well-being.

A key component of the assessment involved identifying the health issues residents believe require the greatest attention. In September 2025, the Grundy County Health Department, with assistance from the Ozarks Public Health Institute, conducted a Community Context Assessment Survey. More than 230 residents participated in the survey, while a workgroup consisting of 26 community partners helped shape the county’s public health mission and vision.

Survey responses revealed several priority areas residents believe should guide future public health initiatives. Among the most frequently identified concerns were healthcare access, mental health challenges, substance misuse, suicide prevention, cancer prevention, and cardiovascular disease.

Participants also identified several health behaviors that contribute to these conditions. These include physical inactivity, the use and misuse of tobacco products, vaping, alcohol, and drugs, limited participation in preventive health screenings, challenges related to personal health management and stress, and poor dietary habits.

In addition to medical and behavioral health concerns, residents pointed to several social factors that strongly influence overall health outcomes. Among those factors were food security, the availability and accessibility of healthcare services, safe and affordable housing, educational opportunities, and the effects of poverty within the community.

Health department officials said the findings will serve as a foundation for future planning and decision-making. The Grundy County Health Department intends to use the results of the assessment to guide the development of programs, partnerships, and initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes for residents.

Community partners and public health officials are expected to reconvene in the coming months to translate the assessment findings into specific strategies and action plans designed to address the county’s most pressing health concerns.

Gibson expressed appreciation to residents, community partners, and organizations that contributed information and participated in the assessment process. She noted that community involvement plays a critical role in helping the health department develop effective responses and strengthen public health services throughout Grundy County.
