Columbia County, NY — Jackie Salvatore, the first woman of color to be elected Sheriff in New York State, joined Power & Politics for a wide ranging interview on Thursday evening.

Salvatore, a Democrat who had been Columbia County Undersheriff since 2022, was elected in November 2025.

“It’s been pretty remarkable. It is privilege and an honor to sit in this seat, as it was explained to me, the Office of Sheriff is unique in you know, it’s the only elected Police head of a Police Department, and there are very few. Taking that into consideration makes it even more that much more special that I get to do this every day,” Salvatore told CBS6.

The conversation included:
-Her path to becoming Sheriff
-Breaking the barrier of becoming the first woman of color elected Sheriff
-Cooperating, or not cooperating, with federal immigration enforcement
-Culture of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department
-Responding the mental health calls
-Efforts to combat scams against seniors
-Treatment options for substance use disorders

The full conversation will be available via podcast on Friday at 5 a.m., and via Youtube on Friday afternoon.
