A total of nine medical training centers located on university campuses will receive a portion of these grant funds for forensic psychiatry fellowships. These serve as wonderful opportunities for licensed physicians pursuing mental health careers in Texas, according to the Office of the Texas Governor.

The office describes forensic psychiatry as “a subspecialty that applies to psychiatric expertise in civil, criminal, and administrative legal proceedings and includes evaluations, treatment, and research related to safety and risk mitigation.”

These grants awarded to institutions will be used to develop one-year fellowship programs.

The grants, administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) serve to boost access and funding for mental healthcare throughout Texas. A core reason to strengthen new forensic psychiatrists is to assist in critical mental health evaluation and treatment in legal proceedings.

You can read more about the state grant program from the THECB website.
