WINTERPORT, Maine (WABI) – Wagner Middle School hosted its first ever Community Table Thursday.

The gathering was aimed at raising awareness around the importance of mental health, especially in adolescents.

The event also featured a free spaghetti dinner, games, and arts and crafts for the kids.

Guest speakers John T. Broderick and Shelly and David Yankowsky were also invited to speak about the stigma around mental health and the painful effects of addiction.

They conveyed to the kids and parents that there is always support available for people who need it.

“It’s really important for us to help our community know that there are resources available and that everyone suffers from different challenges,” said Smith School Councilor Kim Raymond.

The man who helped organize the entire event said it was truly a community effort.

“People wanted to help. All of the businesses, local businesses. We have volunteers here working all of the shifts in the kitchen, setting up. People are coming out of the woodwork to help support because they know how important this is,” said RSU 22 Education Outreach Coordinator Brian Cartwright.

Community Table has been planned for a year and was put on by RSU 22.

The event was made possible through a grant and donations from community partners.
