Ald Candyce Scott (D-3) has announced a call to action challenging the city to move beyond periodic awareness and toward a holistic, daily embrace of mental health and has introduced a City Council resolution declaring mental health a priority and supporting access to mental health services.

Scott noted that mental health, “is a vital thread woven into every aspect of life in New Britain, encompassing public safety, education, housing, and beyond. As a result, it is our collective responsibility to empower individuals with comprehensive information about treatment options, wellness, and proactive healthy measures and services.”

“Mental Health Care is an integral part of our daily lives, deserving of incorporation into every facet of our city,” Scott said

To turn this vision into reality, Alderwoman Scott announced plans to spearhead a series of community health events and activities. These initiatives are to focus on, “forging collaborative partnerships with existing providers and community organizations to drive prevention and devise solutions to ongoing challenges that often lead to substance abuse, housing, employment, and education disparities.”

Community leader and resident Luis Malave praised the resolution Ald Scott introduced, saying that it, “marks a powerful step forward for our community. Because we are now recognizing mental health awareness every month in New Britain, we are sending a clear message: mental health matters! This is about dignity, support, and ensuring that no one in our city feels invisible or alone in their struggle.”

Ald Scott has also announced that she will be providing a Mental Health Awareness Column in the New Britain Progressive.
