Recognized for its forward-thinking approach to crisis response, the Tuscaloosa Police Department has earned the Excellence in Mental Health Award, highlighting its commitment to improving how officers assist individuals facing mental health challenges.
“The Tuscaloosa Police Department appreciates this recognition and the work VitAL does to strengthen how first responders address mental health needs,” said Sebo Sanders, Acting Chief of the Tuscaloosa Police Department.
According to the press release, since “early 2022, the Tuscaloosa Police Department has trained more than 300 personnel through 16 Mental Health First Aid training sessions, including patrol officers, dispatchers, investigators, and administrative staff.”
Beyond these specialized trainings, the department has expanded its Behavioral Intervention Team to include two social workers who support officers in handling complex situations involving mental health needs.
The Excellence in Mental Health Award was presented by Jessica Hoggle, Project Manager for VitAL’s Project Support program, during the Alabama Police Chiefs Conference. Presented to agencies that show efforts to enhance how departments respond to calls involving mental health.
“Our officers have worked hard over the past several years to improve how we respond to these calls,” said Sanders. “This training helps us recognize when someone needs help and how we can connect them with treatment and other resources. We often see firsthand how that approach can change and sometimes even save people’s lives.”

Designed to equip first responders with critical skills, Mental Health First Aid training enables them to identify signs of mental health challenges, safely de-escalate crises, and connect individuals to appropriate community resources.
Post-training evaluations revealed more than 90% increase in knowledge, attitudes, and confidence when responding to mental health situations, with those gains largely maintained in size months later.
