SSRIs work by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin by the pre-synaptic neuron, which helps increase serotonin levels in the brain.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are prescribed for depression, panic, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and PTSD.

Common SSRIs prescribed in the US include: Paroxetine, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxmine, Sertraline, Citalopram, Escitalopram, Vilazodone

The nurse should monitor the patient for serotonin syndrome, common side effects (nausea, diarrhea, loss in libido, erectile dysfunction, insomnia, dry mouth), and should educate the patient to never abruptly stop taking the medication because discontinuation syndrome can occur.

  2. Ahh nurse Sarah, you are still around. You helped me get through nursing school almost 7 years ago. Now that I’m a RN, I’m on a SSRI. Funny how that happens. Maybe you need to mention nursing will lead to Anxiety and depression in your lectures. 😂

  4. Yeah i wouldn't be on them long time, I just got off them i feel so terrible but they do help. But I feel like my dopamine is so low, no hope just want to sleep and not have any excitement with anyone or anything

  5. The people spreading fear in the comments… ssri has helped me SO MUCH!! it’s healthy for your brain, forms new neural pathways, and helps regulate your nervous system. I have zero side effects starting it. Pls dont listen to negative comments about it bc I regret not starting them sooner!
