(ABC 6 News) – The Rochester Area Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus met with a local lawmaker for an update on stalled gun legislation and calls for more mental health support.
The meeting tool place during group’s monthly breakfast with local legislators. Rep. Duane Quam, R-Byron, said he wants more mental health support instead of more gun restrictions.
“The gun type legislation that’s being proposed – far stronger ones are in place in Australia and Canada, and they’ve recently had the issues with mass shootings,” Quam said.
Quam’s position differs from what many DFL lawmakers are pushing for, which includes banning semi-automatic weapons and large capacity magazines. Much of the gun legislation at the Capitol has stalled because of a tied House and a narrow DFL majority in the Senate.
