A new mental health provider has officially launched in the Twin Cities west metro, bringing a unique model of “intermediate care” to Minnesotans facing acute mental health crises.
Compass Health Center celebrated its grand opening in Golden Valley, marking the organization’s first foray into the Minnesota market.
The facility, which has been operational for about six weeks, aims to address a critical gap in the traditional healthcare landscape: the space between once-a-week therapy and inpatient hospitalization.
Bridging the Gap
Compass Health Center specializes in partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programming. According to Dr. Claudia Welke, chief medical officer at Compass Health Center, this intermediate level of care is designed for those who need more support than a standard outpatient visit but do not require an overnight stay in a hospital.
“We do the in-between to those two things,” Dr. Welke said. “It’s a comprehensive model where we bring it all together to work towards stabilizing patients while they’re still at home. And then we discharge them back to the community, back to work, back to school, whatever it is that they were doing before they were going through that crisis.”

Compass Health Center staff members joined Golden Valley city officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 22.
Tackling the Wait-Time Crisis
One of the primary missions of the new center is to eliminate the long wait times that often plague mental health recovery. While many patients seeking help are told they must wait several weeks or more for an appointment, Compass Health Center is designed for immediate intervention.
Through an on-site access center, patients can undergo a short assessment and often begin treatment as early as the same or following day.
“When you’re in a mental health crisis, you need help in that moment,” Dr. Welke explained. “That immediate access is something that we really work hard toward and really feel like is lifesaving. When people are in a mental health crisis, speed matters.”
The Golden Valley location is staffed by approximately 50 people, including a mix of mental health clinicians and operational staff. The center offers specialized programs for adolescents as young as 12, as well as adults, focusing on:
Mood and anxiety disorders
Trauma
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
While the physical building is located in Golden Valley, Compass Health also offers virtual services to ensure accessibility for residents across Minnesota.

Compass Health Center is located at 8301 Golden Valley Road.
