A 31-year-old Barnesville man is facing aggravated assault charges after police say he attacked two people at a Ryan Twp. residence.
State police at Frackville charged Kyle Merenda in connection with the alleged incident, which occurred Saturday at a home on Shady Lane.
According to court documents filed by police, the defendant got into an altercation with two people on the property and brandished a knife at them, leaving one injured. The victims disarmed Merenda and secured the weapon, at which point the defendant fled into the residence, police said.
A woman at the scene told police that the defendant has an extensive drug history and was under the influence at the time of the incident.
Police said the defendant was receiving treatment at Geisinger St. Luke’s hospital in Coaldale as of Saturday.
Merenda appeared for a bail hearing early Sunday morning before on-call Magisterial District Judge James K. Reiley, who set bail at $25,000, according to court records. Unable to post, the defendant was jailed in Schuylkill County Prison.
Merenda faces four felony counts of aggravated assault, a misdemeanor count of possession of an instrument of crime, four misdemeanor counts of simple assault and three misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 6 before Magisterial District Judge Edward J. Tarantelli in Frackville.
