NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Gov. Bill Lee has officially declared May as ‘Mental Health Awareness Month’.

The announcement comes as state leaders highlight protections aimed at ensuring mental health care is treated along with physical health care. Under legislation passed by Congress in 2008, any health insurance plan that covers mental health treatment must generally match its coverage with the plan’s physical health coverage.

That parity requirement applies across key parts of coverage, including copays, deductibles, the number of days covered for a hospital stay, prior authorization, prescription drug tiers and maximum benefit limits.

TDCI Commissioner Carter Lawrence expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to help raise awareness.
