TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) —May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Twin Falls residents wanted to remind people that help is available.
People gathered at the Perrine Bridge holding signs with positive messages reminding passing drivers and pedestrians they are loved and that mental health is available. The signs were bright green, which is the color of Mental Health Awareness Month.
This event has been held at the start of the month for the past 10 years and is organized by Bill Patterson, a recovery coach and peer specialist with Family Health Services.
Patterson said he holds this event at the bridge to encourage people to love themselves, and because it’s personal to him.
“I have two of those attempts from the same bridge, so it is really a dark place for me too. It’s called for me a lot. Today, I don’t answer. And once a year, Mental Health Awareness Month, I get to come, hold a sign, bright green sign to, on that bridge, and I get to shine light through the darkness,” Patterson said.
Patterson said he hopes the signs will remind people that help is available, or encourage people to reach out to someone who could be going through a mental help crisis so they can get the help they need.
