From walk-in crisis support to inpatient treatment, a compassionate team provides behavioral health services at every level of care

May is Mental Health Awareness Month – a reminder that mental health support isn’t just for moments of crisis.

Whether someone is navigating a difficult personal season, supporting a loved one through trauma or a substance use disorder, or facing an urgent need for help, access to timely, compassionate and low-barrier care can make all the difference.

“You do not have to navigate a crisis alone,” says Gale Springer, Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist at Providence Swedish. “There is no shame or judgment around getting mental health support.”

Providence Swedish and Providence Medical Group offer a full spectrum of behavioral health services designed to meet people at every level of need throughout Snohomish County, from inpatient and urgent care behavioral health services to assault and substance use support.

Primary care teams are the best first step

With more than 10 primary care clinics in Snohomish County, Providence Medical Group’s clinicians are the best first step to accessing whole-person care. Behavioral health support is built into routine appointments.

Through a team-based approach, doctors connect patients–often the same day– with a behavioral health clinician on their team. Patients receive  additional expertise to address stress, lifestyle changes and the emotional aspects of physical health, as well as psychiatric consultation.

When further support is needed, patients and families can turn to more robust behavioral health programs at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett (PRMCE) and Swedish Edmonds.

Urgent care tailored to support individuals in crisis

For mental health crises, the Behavioral Health Urgent Care Clinic (BHUC) at PRMCE’s Colby Campus offers same-day support to individuals 16 and older, regardless of insurance status.

The BHUC launched in 2019 as the first-of-its-kind in the region, providing onsite medication management and mental health clinicians to assess immediate needs, coordinate ongoing treatment plans, and bridge therapy while patients await outpatient appointments.

Services are available Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome and virtual visits are also available.

Services designed to balance mental health and daily life

For adults aged 18 and older who need more support than weekly therapy but not a full inpatient stay, Providence Swedish also offers a Partial Hospitalization Program and Intensive Outpatient Program at both the PRMCE Pacific Campus and Swedish Edmonds

Both programs help patients build coping skills to improve self-management of their behavioral health symptoms with more intensive support than weekly therapy can provide.

The intensive outpatient program provides two weeks of skill-building through group sessions, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., five days a week.

The partial hospitalization program gives patients more flexibility to balance mental health care with personal commitments, with four weeks of skill-building through group sessions, 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. or 3 to 6:15 p.m, three days a week.

Both programs accept self-referrals and walk-ins and also provide medication management.

Compassionate care to address substance use

PRMCE also offers confidential, evidence-based drug and alcohol dependency treatment services, through the Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Services program.

This trusted cornerstone of behavioral health care at the hospital’s Pacific Campus offers walk-in hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and an intake line available 24/7 at 425-258-7390.

Inpatient support for those who need it

When around-the-clock care is required, the inpatient behavioral health unit at PRMCE Colby Campus and Swedish Edmonds offer patients with acute psychological illnesses with psychiatry, art therapy, recreational therapy, medication management and a dedicated peer support specialist – all within state-of-the-art facilities.

Advocates for victims of assault and abuse

Providence Swedish also operates the Providence Intervention Center for Assault and Abuse (PICAA), a team of professionals available around the clock as a  resource for survivors of sexual assault and interpersonal violence of all ages.

Forensic exams are available at the PICAA clinic or at emergency departments throughout Snohomish County,  paired with advocacy, on-site therapy, and other support resources.

The confidential PICAA 24-hour helpline is available at 425-252-4800.

“All of our teams offer evidence-based, trauma-informed care and are trained to meet patients where they’re at,” Springer says. “We work hard to ensure patients find the right level of care to ensure their long-term success in mental health recovery.”
