Tyler French and his buddies are local podcasters using their platform to help other Iowans. “Mostly anime, but we do branch out like video games, cartoons, other events and stuff like that,” French described the podcast, called The Weekly Weebs Podcast. The guys have a lot of fun with these discussions. They hope that common ground helps them connect with listeners when discussing more serious topics such as mental health. “That’s been the real stigma is, you know, toxic masculinity, not talking about your feelings, bottling things up,” French said. By starting the conversation, their goal is to inspire people to do the same. “Just to realize how important your mental health is,” French said. The group took their efforts out of the studio and into a fundraiser called Nerdvember in Norwalk. Proceeds go to two non-profits supporting veterans and members of LGBTQ communities. “Two of the most marginalized and susceptible to whether it’s hazing, bullying, or just negative self appearance,” French explained. “Those are organizations we want to work with to help raise awareness, raise funding.” To donate, visit the GoFundMe page here. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, there is help. Please call 988, the national mental health hotline.
