The Delegation of the European Union to the State of Qatar, together with the EU MedBridge programme under the Media Connect network, organised a StoryLab CONNECT on mental health in journalism on Tuesday, 5 May 2026 at The Ned Doha.
Bringing together journalism students and early-career journalists, the event provided a safe and open space for dialogue on the mental health challenges faced in the profession. Participants shared personal experiences, explored the pressures inherent in journalism, and reflected collectively on practical ways to address them.
In his address, the Ambassador of the European Union to Qatar, H.E. Dr Cristian Tudor, highlighted:
“Journalists are at the heart of how our societies understand the world. Supporting their mental well-being is not only a professional necessity, but a shared responsibility. Through initiatives like StoryLab CONNECT, the European Union is proud to support young journalists in building resilience, fostering ethical storytelling, and shaping a media landscape that is both responsible and human-centered.”
In a fast-evolving media landscape shaped by high expectations and rapid news cycles, journalists’ mental health is an increasing concern. Exposure to demanding content, constant performance pressure, and shifting professional standards can take a significant toll on young media professionals.
Through this first StoryLab CONNECT in Qatar, Media Connect encouraged open conversations about mental health while promoting a more constructive, solutions-oriented approach to journalism. The event emphasised the importance of safe spaces where young journalists can speak freely, build resilience, and reconsider their professional practices.
Mental health remains a key priority for the Media Connect network, which advocates for more responsible journalism that not only informs but also protects those who produce it.
At the close of the event, a Media Connect award was announced to recognise the most compelling journalistic piece produced by participants. The award encourages the application of newly acquired skills and highlights stories focusing on resilience, solutions, and positive impact.
Media Connect is the regional network of young journalists and journalism students under EU MedBridge, the regional communication programme of the European Commission, implemented by the Directorate-General for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf (DG MENA).
The network supports a new generation of media professionals across the MENA region and beyond, with ongoing expansion into the Gulf and the development of a European hub. It provides a platform for connection, training, and collaboration, enabling young journalists to produce impactful content, enhance the visibility of European Union-supported initiatives, and foster cross-cultural dialogue. With a strong focus on constructive journalism and mental health, Media Connect promotes solutions-driven storytelling while supporting the well-being of those shaping the narratives.
