PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — Four Rivers Behavioral Health has been selected to participate in a Columbia University study focused on supported employment for adults on the autism spectrum.

Officials said the research will examine the effectiveness of the Individual Placement and Support model, which emphasizes placing individuals in competitive jobs based on their strengths and preferences, followed by ongoing support.

The study will include nearly 200 adults in Kentucky and will evaluate outcomes through a randomized controlled trial. Researchers, practitioners and community partners will collaborate on the project, which is expected to take about two years.

Four Rivers Behavioral Health was chosen in part because its supported employment program already uses the model being studied. The program serves about 100 participants annually, with roughly three-quarters currently employed, according to the agency.

Officials said the program provides continued support after placement, including on-site assistance and regular follow-up to help ensure long-term success.

The study aims to address employment challenges faced by individuals on the autism spectrum, many of whom are willing to work but face barriers to entering the workforce.

Results from the study will be shared with the broader community upon completion.
