Mental health challenges are affecting more people across the UK than ever before, with 1 in 5 adults and young people experiencing a mental health problem each year. Despite growing awareness, stigma around mental health still exists, leaving many people feeling ashamed or worried they’ll be judged if they speak up, which is worsened by hurdles like long waiting lists and uncertainty about where to turn acting as barriers to people reaching out for support.

Saints Foundation offers a variety of projects where people who are struggling with their mental health can receive support. No matter how overwhelming things may feel, it’s important to remember that struggling does not mean failing, and nobody must face it alone. Saints Foundation care, will listen, and provide tools to better manage their mental health:

Saints By Your Side

Saints By Your Side is a mental health programme run by Saints Foundation in partnership with Southampton FC. We know that men are far less likely to seek support for their mental health. Saints Foundation runs support sessions here at St Mary’s Stadium, giving men from the local community a space to come together and learn ways to improve their wellbeing.

Extra Time Hub

Every 90 minutes, someone in the UK takes their own life. In Southampton, statistics show that of the men who died by suicide in the last two years, over half (54%) were not known to mental health services.

Southampton Football Club and Saints Foundation are teaming up this season to pilot a matchday mental health service, the Extra Time hub. The aim is to raise awareness about this important issue and provide a service that offers help to supporters when they are most in need.

Extra Time hub is located outside the Kingsland Stand near Gasworks on matchdays.

Talking Tactics

Talking Tactics offers a unique opportunity for young people aged 11-18 to receive mental health mentoring once a week for up to 6 months. The project is part of a sustained effort to reduce health inequalities, bring mental health support back into the community, help young people to build relationships with trusted adults, and them to set and work towards goals that build self-agency and confidence.
