MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Thirteen high school students from across Wisconsin filled the Capitol rotunda Wednesday, advocating for youth mental health.

The Wisconsin Office of Children’s Mental Health hosted the event, which recognized the first-ever class of “Mental Health Champions.”

Students shared work ranging from building supportive environments to proposals for policy changes at the Capitol.

One champion from McFarland said his focus is increasing access to youth mental health professionals after seeing a gap in resources firsthand.

“When people say ‘oh, students shouldn’t be focusing on this’ it’s like you’re losing perspective and a diversity of perspective and you’re not helping kids,” said Dean Swanlund, a McFarland youth mental health champion.

Student champions said the program is already making a difference and they are excited to keep building momentum for the next group of young leaders.
