YouTube, Snap Settle Landmark Youth Mental Health Lawsuit with Kentucky School District - News and Statistics

Alphabet‘s YouTube and Snap have resolved claims brought by a Kentucky school district in what was the first case scheduled for trial among a wave of litigation seeking to hold social media platforms financially responsible for addressing a youth mental health crisis. The settlements were disclosed in court filings on Friday in federal court in Oakland, California, according to a Reuters report dated May 15.

The Breathitt County School District, located in rural Eastern Kentucky, had alleged that social media companies fueled a mental health crisis among students, leaving schools to bear the costs. While the specific terms of the settlements with YouTube and Snap were not made public, the district is still set to take Meta Platforms, which owns Facebook and Instagram, and TikTok to trial on June 15.

A YouTube spokesperson stated that the matter has been resolved amicably, and the company’s focus remains on developing age-appropriate products and parental controls. Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, did not respond to a request for comment.

More than 3,300 lawsuits involving addiction claims are currently pending in California state court against social media companies. An additional 2,400 cases brought by individuals, municipalities, states, and school districts have been centralized in California federal court.

In a landmark trial on March 25, a Los Angeles jury found Meta and Alphabet’s Google negligent for designing social media platforms deemed harmful to young people, awarding a combined $6 million to a 20-year-old woman who said she became addicted to social media as a child. The companies have denied the allegations and stated they take extensive steps to keep teens and young users safe.

Breathitt County is one of over a thousand school districts suing social media companies over claims of causing a student mental health crisis. The district has been seeking more than $60 million to cover the costs of counteracting social media’s impact on students’ mental health and to fund a 15-year mental health program. It also seeks a court order requiring the companies to modify their platforms to reduce addictive features.

The case serves as a bellwether, or test case, for over a thousand similar school district lawsuits. Judges and attorneys often use bellwether verdicts to assess the potential value of remaining claims and guide settlement talks, with several bellwether cases typically tried before reaching a broader resolution.
