BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Society raises men to be providers, protectors, and problem-solvers, that’s according to Behavioral Health Supervisor Jason Giffard from the Kern Behavioral Health and Recovery Services.
Giffard adds that problems begin when we teach boys to “buck up” and hide their emotions.
According to the Center for Disease Control, men commit about 80% of all suicides, nearly four times higher than women, but are less likely to seek mental health support. Gifford says that many men feel afraid of being seen as weak.
He pointed out that loved ones, and even some health providers, can miss signs of depression because it presents differently. Depression in men can look like: anger, irritation, frustration, withdrawal, and substance abuse.
