On May 11, Big Sky nonprofit Wellness In Action announced a change in leadership, promoting director of programs Kiernan Volden to the executive director role.
Volden joined WIA in 2022 and has been “integral” to the nonprofit’s mission as a mental and behavioral health resource provider, working to reduce barriers to care. She offers a “hands-on” leadership style and has led WIA’s expansion of programs like the affordable counseling program, community health worker services, groups and trainings, and youth scholarship initiatives, according to a press release. Volden moved to Big Sky in 2021, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from the State University of New York Geneseo.
“I am honored and energized to step into this role,” Volden stated in the release. “WIA’s work has never been more important, and I am committed to building on the foundation we have established to ensure every person in Big Sky has access to the mental health support they need and deserve.”
WIA board chair Dana Wikan said the leadership change allows the organization to carry on the momentum created by former executive director Allison Bradac, who was “pivotal” in strengthening WIA and expanding its impact.
“Under her leadership, WIA deepened its mental health programming, built strong partnerships with local organizations, and established a more sustainable foundation for the future. Her steady guidance helped position WIA as a trusted, community-centered nonprofit prepared for its next phase of growth,” Wikan stated in an email to EBS.
Bradac’s tenure ended in December. Wikan said that the 21-year-old organization is excited to have Volden at the helm for its next chapter.
“Kiernan has been a cornerstone of this organization, pouring her energy into building and leading the programs that make WIA what it is today,” Wikan stated. “Her passion for this community and her vision for what WIA can become make her the ideal person to lead us forward. We are thrilled to have her stepping into this leadership role as we work alongside the community to strengthen mental health and wellness support throughout Big Sky.”
