An hours-long standoff on Memorial Day ended without incident after first responders were able to persuade a male who said he was armed to come out of a room at a residence in north Fort Wayne.

Fort Wayne police said a resident in the 2700 block of W. Washington Center Road returned home about 11:30 a.m. Monday and discovered the door to the residence had been barricaded from the inside.

While checking the interior, officers located an adult male inside a bedroom. The man said he was armed, a news release said.

The Emergency Services Team, Air Support Unit, and Crisis Response Team were brought in for assistance.

Officers were able to make “intermittent contact” with the male and located a recently recorded video of him, the release said. “Based on the video, the limited communication, and his prior history, it was determined that the individuals was experiencing a mental health crisis.”

The Emergency Services and Crisis Response teams established extended communication with the individual. About 4:20 p.m., the male was talked into emerging from the barricaded room.

Police said he was taken into custody by Emergency Services and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment related to mental health.
