LAS VEGAS — As summer vacation begins, mental health experts say families should take time to check in with children about how they’re doing emotionally and behaviorally.

Jennifer Moore of Foundations Counseling Center said parents and caregivers can watch for several warning signs that a child may be struggling and could benefit from additional support.

Those signs include sudden mood swings or irritability, sleeping too much or having trouble sleeping, and increased anxiety, worry, fearfulness, or anger.

Other red flags include spending excessive time alone or online, and making negative statements such as “Nobody cares,” “I’m not good enough,” or “What’s the point?”
