CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Rosecrance Behavioral Health in Champaign has now opened its new urgent care and triage center for adults dealing with mental health emergencies.
The urgent care center can triage up to six people at a time and provide crisis stabilization for another six.
“The people we would imagine coming into this space are people who are maybe struggling with suicidality, they may have lost their medication, or they need to get reupped on their medication for mental health issues,” said Liz Miner-McIntyre, the crisis services director.

For the last two and a half years, Rosecrance has been working to transform part of its building in North Champaign into the urgent care center it is today. In part, thanks to a $1.4 million federal grant from Senator Dick Durbin.
“Some of us grew up believing it was like a curse; you didn’t talk about it,” Sen. Durbin said. “Now people understand it is an illness that can be successfully treated.”
Miner-McIntyre knows that starting to break that stigma is part of the reason she has seen an increase in people seeking services.
“We are steadily seeing 20% more adults and kids in crisis every year for the last three to four years,” she said.
Before people step into the space, they often meet with professionals like Becky Rowe and Zac White — a co-response team with the University of Illinois Police Department. The two are partnered up while responding to crisis intervention calls.

Sometimes, those crises happen in public places, like MTD buses. Before, people like Rowe and White would need to take those experiencing a crisis to a hospital for care. Now, they can take them to the Rosecrance urgent care during operating hours.
This center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you need help and want to connect with a professional at Rosecrance, visit their website for more details. There are multiple locations in Central Illinois; click here for a full map.
