A Shop and Talk Men’s Mental Health event brought community members together at Unlimited Potential Barber and Beauty Salon as Genesee Health System kicked off Men’s Mental Health Month in June.

FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) – A Shop and Talk Men’s Mental Health event brought community members together at Unlimited Potential Barber and Beauty Salon as Genesee Health System kicked off Men’s Mental Health Month in June.

The gathering aimed to break the silence surrounding men’s mental health while connecting attendees with available resources. Community members engaged in open discussions about mental health, stress management and preventative care while receiving complimentary haircuts.

“The barbershop offers the ability to have a safe space, to talk about some of the things they’re going through,” said Dante Jennings, manager of co-occurring integrative services at Genesee Health System.

“Whether they are going through a divorce or having financial issues, the barbershop is the spot that many people come to disclose their issues and that’s what this talk is here at the barbershop today.”

“It’s giving people the opportunity and the space to talk about whatever crisis, whatever issue or whatever they want to talk about today they have the ability to do so,” Jennings said.

Community members attended the event at no cost. Genesee Health System plans to host similar gatherings in the future.
