BENTON, Ill. (WSIL) — A jail-based mental health restoration program is launching in a southern Illinois detention facility.

This information comes from the Franklin County Sheriff Kyle Bacon on Thursday who stated the program is one of only three in the state and will launch on June 16.

How it works is mental health providers from Centerstone will provide individualized treatment and restoration services for those who are deemed unfit to stand trial, Bacon explained. “The goal of the program is to help participants achieve fitness while receiving appropriate mental health care in a secure local setting,” he added.

Other counties in Illinois who have implemented the program already are Kankakee and McHenry Counties.

“The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is honored to serve as a host site for this important initiative and looks forward to serving as a regional resource for Southern Illinois,” Bacon stated. “This program represents a meaningful investment in public safety, mental health treatment, and the overall administration of justice.”

The program is funded through the Illinois Department of Human Services.
