State Police are investigating a weekend crash in Carbon County that left a McAdoo woman dead.

Perla Decena Castillo, 19, was killed shortly after midnight Saturday when the vehicle she was a passenger in crashed along the first block of Main Street in Banks Township outside of Junedale, State Police said.

Troopers gave this account:

Decena Castillo was riding in a compact SUV driven by Endy Rodriguez Sanchez, 21, of Beaver Meadows.

Rodriguez Sanchez was traveling west on Main Street and negotiating a curve in the road when he began to lose control.

He entered the opposing lane of travel and attempted to counter-steer, causing the vehicle to further lose control.

The vehicle rotated clockwise, crossed back over to the westbound lane and onto the shoulder.

The vehicle then went down a small embankment and struck several trees on its driver’s side. After impact with the trees, the vehicle spun counterclockwise and rolled onto its driver’s side before coming to rest.

Decena Castillo, who had been riding on the driver’s lap at the time of the crash, was found trapped underneath the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Information on the cause and manner of her death were immediately available. The Carbon County Coroner’s office planned to conduct an autopsy on Monday.

Rodriguez Sanchez and a second front-seat passenger, Francisco Heronimo, 28, whose address was not listed, suffered suspected minor injuries and were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Hazleton for treatment.

No charges had been filed as of deadline Monday.
